Shifnal history group

Shifnal History Group members come from many backgrounds and experiences. What brings us together is an interest in our town. New volunteers are always welcome and we are a very friendly group.

Membership is free – no annual fees!

The basic duties of our volunteers are:

  • Staffing the Local History Exhibition at the old Fire Station in Shrewsbury Road for at least 2 hours a month. There are always 2 or 3 volunteers on duty per session – you are never alone.
  • Talking to visitors, helping them to enjoy the display and research the collections.
  • Following guidelines for opening the building, setting up the display for visitors and closing securely.
  • Helping to maintain the exhibitions: dusting displays, sorting files of photographs and other maintenance jobs.
  • Attending meetings of the Group to plan future activities.
  • Agreeing to abide by our policies covering safeguarding, health and safety and data protection.

There are other opportunities for volunteers, such as helping at special openings for visiting groups and schools, and to undertake your own research.

If you are interested, pop into the Fire Station and talk to the volunteers there, or email shifnalhistory@outlook.com.

Our Group also welcomes any young people who are looking for temporary placements to fulfil the community involvement part of their Duke of Edinburgh (DofE) Award.  Working with our volunteers on a Saturday morning at the Fire Station over a series of weeks, you will gain experience of working in a community setting and we gain your fresh input into the displays and the way we work.
